This week I had the misfortune yet again of telling a patient that they had just wasted $180 on a weightloss product. Why do people believe that they can eat what they like, live how they like, change a few minor things and take some expensive pill to lose weight?
It wont work!
We’ve all heard about the guy who ate fast food and lost weight. No one remembered that he ended up with heart disease and cancer! We all heard about the friend who lost weight on diet pills – but ask yourself – what is their HEALTH like?
This recent fad of celebrity weightloss pills and even worse, the massive weightloss TV shows where morbidly obese people smash their bodies to pieces in the hope of losing the most kilos/pounds this week. Destroyed joints, overworked hearts, unnecessary loose skin hanging like a skirt, underlying health issues bubbling just under the surface – all for good TV viewing.
I have said it before and I will say it again – never go on a diet with the sole aim of losing weight!
I’ve worked in health for most of my life and have seen appalling after effects of the wrong diets. But I’ve also seen the long term effects of healthy living – usually accompanied with taunts of being ‘health nuts’ or ‘lucky’ because they age so well and avoid all the myriad chronic health issues that the rest of society accepts as unnecessarily normal.
One friend lost a huge amount of weight – and ended up in hospital on life support. Her heart and vital organs could not cope but that didn’t matter – she was getting compliment for the first time in years.
Another patient took legal speed to lose weight and ended up the same way. Massive weight loss, accompanied by the inevitable reduction surgery to remove a few kilos of loose flesh – all unnecessary, and all avoidable if done the right way!
Please see my other posts in this category on the right diet – the only one I recommend is the alkaline diet. Simply put, we can diet all we like – we may even lose some weight – but unless your body is alkaline, you will have inflammation – that means ill health and pain.
I even have my own weightloss supplements – not many mind you, but some do help!
I am often asked why I am so hardnosed on this topic. I am actually no more headstrong than any other health topic. Think about it. Do you love cars? Would you put sugar in your fuel tank? Or sand in the oil? Or spray a can of coke or spray paint inside with the door shut? Yet you put sugar in your body, muck into your system and cover it with toxic chemicals – unlike a car, your body is a living, breathing organism that needs careful and pure balance – it will continue to work, struggle through each day and eventually break down with a screeching, shuddering end. Why?
Maybe your thing is fashion? Would you wash your garments in paint, mud, effluent? What would they look like then? Yet your body is okay so long as you can continue to paint it and cover it up? Underneath is still the same mess!
How many supreme athletes do you know who live a long, healthy life? Not many. And it’s not just because of a ‘hard life’ – I know many who eat what they like because they ‘work it off’ – when I was a child, the average Dad – around 40 to 50 years of age, was willowy and sinewy and without fat. Yet they ate and drank like fish – they ‘earned it’. Those poor guys didn’t end up well. I should know, later on I nursed many of them. Later on, Dads around this age were pudgy with muscles trying to break through the mass. They are aging even worse.
Likewise with women – having children and even being a woman has terrible effects on the health. Weightgain can happen purely by default too much oestrogen causes all sorts of thickening – around the middle, the neck, abdomen, legs – along with tiredness, depression and eating for comfort.
And then we come to the kids. Just 50 years ago, children ate pure food, home made and largely without heavy fat and carbohydrate loading. Obesity amongst children was rare. Today, obesity is the norm – it’s considered so normal in fact that our average size is 14 – when it used to be 10! Among children, coupled with the computer-age, kids miss out on sunlight and fresh air – that usually correlates to exercise. Many school aged children no longer exercise – and their parents actually find excuses for them to not partake…
If you don’t know the answer yet, you haven’t read my other articles on diet and health. I really did try to avoid having a weight loss category as I find people will go to it rather than anything on pro active health. Don’t expect a miracle. If you like rubbish expect your health to be rubbish. If you are of the habit of saying that you ‘hate’ salad or raw food, look at that plate in front of you – is it stodgy, fatty, bland and covered in enough stuff to give it some flavour? Then expect no miracles in your life!
I am tired of hearing “I need my meat!” You DON’T need anything other than fresh water and pure, fresh plant based foods. Anything else is your own addictions. The only one who ‘needs’ that meat was the creature it came from – not you. You either take health advice or you don’t – but that choice will dictate how your life will end up.
So, what is the answer? It’s been written before in this blog – so get reading. Feel free to print off the advice. Copy the diet plan and stick it. There is NO way you wont lose weight. And no way you wont gain vital health once again.
But it’s up to you.
